Extensive growing (as cane or banana culture...) has always been impossible in Saint Barthelemy because of rarety of rain and mountain relief. Flora is growing very well and all the plants are island's specific. By the sea, you can find : -
The Mancenillier (hippomane mancinella) leaves look like the European
pear-tree but sap and fruits are dangerous. SAINT BARTHELEMY, is a nature reserve where hunting is forbidden. Birds are not timorous and turdleloves are used to come and eat pieces of bread over villas terraces, spread away specially for them. The mascot island is the PELICAN, often called 'Large Throat". You can easely observe them on boats in Gustavia or on rocks of "Wind Coast". Arrounded Saint-Jean and Salines pond about mangroves are found plenty of young waders. Some other varieties of birds found in Saint Barthelemy :
- The sucrier (Coreba Floreda) Ground fauna seems to be very poor. The Iguana (Iguana Delicatissima) has to be protected, because going to disappear. By the coasts, we can find "La Tête à l'Anglais" (Cactus Intortus) or named "Coussin de belle-mère" same as cierges ans raquettes, some other varieties of cactus. Some other varieties of lizars can be seen : -
Ground Anolis (Autica Pleci) So each day, you can observe whales and dolphins playing near the coast. |
